Keeping things simple and making time for you

How much time do you take for yourself? I know I’m guilty of putting myself at the bottom of the list, especially when it feels like there are so many more important things to be done. But let me just tell you, you are important and deserve to be at the top of that list.

There are always certain times of the year when we end up racing around, doing all the things we feel we ‘should’ be doing and then getting stressed out. But have you ever stopped to wonder why being busy leads to us feeling stressed and unhappy? After many years of wondering the same, I’m starting to think the answer lies in the lack of time we give ourselves to rest.

If you’re anything like me, any time that you may have set aside to do something just for you will often get swept aside and used for something ‘more important’ instead. The problem I’ve found with this way of thinking is that these so called ‘important’ things don’t get done any quicker or better and you just end up feeling rubbish. If any of this sounds familiar allow me to share with you how I prioritise the important stuff, reduce my to-do list and still try to make time for myself.

If, like me, you love a list, then my 3-2-1 method may work well for you. It’s something that I’ve developed over the past year as I’ve tried to prioritise myself more. So grab yourself a pen and paper, your notes app or anything else you like to use to make lists, and lets see if we can take a few things off your plate.

  • Write yourself a to-do list. Put everything on it no matter how big or how small.
  • Look at the list and highlight the top three most important things. The things that really do need to get done or that will make the most impact to your day.
  • Then look at the list again and cross off at least two things that aren’t important. The things that you feel you ‘should’ do but they don’t make you feel good, or that won’t have any impact on your day or anyone else’s.
  • Now write yourself a new list. Put on it the three most important things and then add one thing that you would like to do just for you.

Here I think is the most important thing to remember. If you don’t manage to get everything done on your list, you’ve still been successful. By focussing on what is important to you, you can still feel pleased that you have achieved something. And if you didn’t manage to get that time to rest? You’ve still tried. You’ve planted the seed that you are important and deserve to be taken care of too, and that seed can only grow!

The more you focus on what truly matters to you and allow yourself even a few moments of rest each day, the smaller your stress will become. If you are really struggling to find the time then know that it doesn’t have to be a lot. 10 minutes, 5 minutes, even 1 minute a day can still make a huge difference to how you feel.
